Dry Lake 13 - Shelters and Rock Rings

  • drylake13-003 There was no information available on this site other than it being a rock ring site, and there were no pottery sherds to help in the identification of who may have used this site.  There is one unusual thing that we don't come across very often and that's a group of rocks at the center of the circle.  We occasionally find a single rock at the center of a circle, but not a group of rocks.  Since we cannot dig below the visible rocks to see if there were leftovers from a campfire, we cannot rule in or out a small fire pit for cooking or warmth.  Another possibility is that the rocks were used to stabilize a center pole in the structure or they could have been ceremonial in purpose ,or... ??? The grouping of rocks in the center are visible in the rock ring photos below.
