Goodsprings 1

  • goodsprings1-010 Goodsprings 1 located in the hills not far from the town of Goodsprings Nevada, is a combination several small sites scattered over a distance of about one mile. A couple of unique things that we saw on this trip were some rock art symbols that I had not seen in this area before, and what I am assuming are roasting pits, but not like the typical pits we are used to seeing. The main rock in the pit was not of normal limestone, but a stone that was still reddish even after being heated -- as you know, in most pits the limestone turns white after being heated. The other alternative is that these are not roasting pits and I don’t have a clue at what I am looking at.

  • goodsprings1-172 Site 5: The two roasting pits are very different from what would be considered a normal roasting pit. Instead of being made up of white rock, which is what happens to limestone when it is heated, its major component is a reddish rock which is probably sandstone from a nearby hill.
